I went through four more installations after writing this bug at the
request of a pop up. I had no further problems.The reason for four
installations was I was trying to figure out how to do away with the
three partitions that the installation gave me. Kubuntu was installed on
a 23,756 MB partition

made you not having unity on ugprade (there is a race in compiz which is

Yes, this bug still occurs on Precise with all the latest updates. To
see it, for example, open gedit, choose View->Fullscreen, then press
Ctrl+H for Replace. When the Replace dialog appears, the Unity panel
and launcher will appear too.

I made a little demo video which is 15M .mkv containing h264/FLAC
encoded.
Import into openshot and then drag to the timeline. Computer freezes up
as OpenShot eats all available memory and swap and eventually gets
killed by the kernel OOM killer.
