Hmm, okay, I did reproduce this once, but I'm not able to reproduce it
now. Here's what I've tried...
1) backend == tmux, running byobu inside of byobu:
kirkland@x220:~$ byobu
sessions should be nested with care. unset $TMUX to force.
2) backend == tmux, running byobu-tmux inside of byobu:

News on what exactly? The code isn't in trunk anymore, and we've applied
the patch to our releases.
If you're looking for a patch that doesn't use O_NOFOLLOW, you might as
well remove the offending code from lightdm altogether, that would be
the best solution.

The correct driver should be r8169 and it always reports: eth0: link

I can't deliberately reproduce this bug, but it happens increasingly
often and several times tonight.
Happens with one or more files opened.
Usually (always?) I am quickly saving a file using ctrl-s and changing
mouse focus to a terminal window to compile code.
