Thanks for the reply. As you suggested I tried the scanner (Canon Lide 60
flatbed scanner) with the preference set to scan front and back, front
only, back only, and in all cases the scanner does not return to the
ready-to-scan position until the next time I hit the "scan" button.

I was searching for reports on LibreOffice Writer Compare Document,
because mostly it doesn't seem to work. Your submission hits the nail
right on the head in my experience:

I installed 12.04 alpha 1 on a newly partitioned disk. The behaviour was
exactly the same: mousing over the sound applet icon caused the error
reported above. zerwas' Composite xorg.conf edit seems to be all that
was needed to make the problem go away.
My xorg.conf was generated by nvidia-settings
