I normally have no key bound to "Next Window" of the Application

Since recently, this problem has been reduced, but is not gone. Resuming
goes much quicker now, but still takes ~5 seconds, as compared to 30-45s
previously. I have a brand new laptop so I still consider 5 seconds
slow.

plugin on 11.04, that's why it's blacklisted on the default panel config
(but this doesn't apply when you remove and readd the indicator plugin).

right click on usb-drive provides two options: safely-remove and
unmount. Unmounting works fine as well as eject in nautilus. But safely-
remove leads to either instant remount of the drive including opening a
nautilus window or system freeze. The freeze occures with a 2.5" di
ps isn't a terribly informative source; could you profile it with
valgrind? (If not, I probably could, but perhaps not till this weekend.)

I totally agree the proper fix would be that OpenVZ provides a /dev/console. My
patch is rather a workaround.
Concerning jobs specifying console access, they already fallback to
CONSOLE_NONE in job_process_spawn so they are working (maybe not exactly with
the same behaviour though).
