Seems like this is a kernel issue, with users of other Distros
experiencing the same problem.
A fix is:
Added file sony-laptop.conf with single line:

I use WICD as the network manager (because network manager does not work
on my MSI Wind clone. I can connect to internet ( I am using it now) but
Evolution insists I am not connected to the internet. Presumably because
it is looking for a connection via Network Manager.
