Just an FYI. Sound Recorder and Skype were both not responding after I
uninstalled ubuntu-desktop that depends on some of the ALSA stuff.
After reinstalling ubuntu-desktop they both started to at least
acknowledge the mic albeit with the "chipmunk" nonsense.
Sordna, does that patch seem to work?
I think can see a problem with how valac is generating the C in relation
to what Ted mentions above. In current trunk the generated C for
playlists-menuitem.vala free's the strings that are used for playlist
items. The patch below attempts to duplicate the labels when passing
them to dbusmenu.

The issue turned out to be due to how libvirt uses nc through ssh .
hggdh had a line in his .ssh/config entry for the host containing
LocalCommand printf "whatever"
The text being printed out was interpreted by the virsh client as coming
from libvirt, so the first set of characters were r
