It's an NFS umount issue.
I've now tried using Natty's umountnfs.sh, but there's no difference, and
I've also tried altering fstab to use an IP address rather than a name. No
difference to the failure.
The immediate shutdown inconsistency is because the NFS mount hasn't yet
happened, triggered b
If you are having problems logging onto the new Ubuntu 11.10. Then give
this a go:
Press "Ctrl+Alt+F1"
login
sudo chmod 777 -R /tmp
sudo reboot

I use nvidia TwinView (one X desktop across two monitors). notification-
daemon was apparently sensitive to this (presumably through Xinerama
info?) and would popup on my primary screen.
notify-osd seems to be unaware of this,
In EOG 3.2.0 (Ubuntu 11.10, Oneiric) the bug cannot be reproduced.
Reason: The sidebar is now totally disabled. The menu "Ansicht –
Seitenleiste, Strg-F9" in the german version, which probably reads "view
– sidebar, Ctrl-F9" in the english version is greyed out.

Yes, I'm sorry if my lack of understanding about the shutdown process
results in false assumptions.
I've added "set -x" to the files mentioned in /etc/init.d
The hang happens, for me, on the nfs umounting. The last four lines
are:-
exec
[ /nfs/home ]
[ no = no ]
fstab-decode umount -f -l /nfs/h
