I have discovered that a clean restart solves the playback issue. In a
new session, audio sounds normal, but after using a few applications,

In prior releases, irssi was published without the 18bind_utf8-fix patch
which was designed to fix a problem with binds and utf8 keys. This
breaks the default behavior of alt-backspace, which is to delete the
prior word (much the same as ctrl-w does).

In the Preferences dialog, under Channels -> Logging, when I turn off
the checkboxes "Display scrollback from previous session" and "Enable
logging of conversations to disk", they have no effect and are checked
again when I restart XChat. Also the conversations are logged, and
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
