I tried getting the process list from the live CD (ps ax) and then
comparing it to the process list from my laptop. I did both while
lightdm was stopped & no X apps running, as I can reproduce the issue
under those circumstances.

other than purging and re-installing the package:

This is the only way to ensure that we always have the latest PPD

Otus, with bug #791205 being fixed I believe this one is fixed as well.

I am on ubuntu 10.10 and i had the same conflict, wicd vs network-
manager and my wifi card didn't connect to the ap while i was in text
mode (gdm not started). I solved putting these lines in rc.local file:

The shortcut is indeed configurable through Compiz Config. I managed to
change it to Super+F10 and became able to use IDE debugger again.
