Yes, unity-2d is using GSettings wherever possible. Unfortunately metacity is
still using GConf, and unity-2d needs to read the name of the window title font
from metacity: that's why we are still using GConf in that case.

Apparently the fix hasn't made it into the daily releases of Natty on
EC2.
This is especially troublesome for someone trying to boot a HVM instance
with CUDA enabled, because a reboot is needed after installation of the
NVIDIA dev drivers.
Here is a one-liner for a quick fix:

Occured running up-to-date daily build of a couple of days ago. I logged
in and started the update manager. Also I switched around the Virtualbox
window so there was some major rezising of the desktop, maybe that had
to do with it.

This patch seems to solve the primary issue. It is not yet, anywhere upstream
as far as I know. So it may cause other side effects or get changed before it
is finally submitted.
With this applied I was able to boot pre-3.0 kernels as HVM guests under
Oneiric again. However booting an Oneiric gue
I have no way to reproduce this. It always just occured randomly every
3-6 days. But I don't think I has happened for the last two weeks or so,
even with 2.6.38-10-server (now upgrading to 2.6.38-11).
