The missing menus affect many programs. The terminal program, games,
and even Firefox. This is a major problem. Unity may want to have a
unified menu system, but thus far all my clients have demanded that I go
back to the "Classic" Ubuntu view.

decided to get more data. I can consistently reproduce the crash by
starting X, starting 5 urxvt windows, then rapidly moving windows around

I encountered this problem and figured out that it's a misleading UI.
After entering IPs for Address, Netmask, and Gateway, I clicked the
"Add" button, thinking this would store it. I then went on to fill out
"DNS servers" etc. I then encountered the grayed-out "Save" button, with
seemingly no way

Seems to be a pretty big problem given my PC doesn't have a lot of RAM.
I'm currently using a GeForce 460 with the proprietary driver. Every
time I open the dash the RAM usage of Compiz raises about 0.3 MBs and
holds until I shutdown the PC.

Converting all *dm packages to have /etc/X11/default-display-manager be
handled as an alternative seems too expensive to me.
So I think we are down to two options:
* Add an upgrade quirk to update-manager to remove gdm. Then you'd only
get the question if you use apt-get, which is fair I think.

does update-manager set something that /var/lib/dpkg/info/lightdm.config
can read to see whether this is a dist-upgrade instead of a normal
package installation? Or can it be changed to export something which
indicates that? Or can lightdm.config just check if update-manager is in

I agree that removing gdm is too dangerous. It would be nice to remove
it, as upgraders really don't want two display managers lying around
after upgrading. I'm guessing nothing will depend on it so an
autoremove would get rid of it anyway?
So "don't ask on upgrade" is the best option in my opin
