You seem to already know this, switching VLC to using ALSA solves the
problem (tried it to at least 2 different ubuntu installations). No
killing/restarting or removing pulseaudio required. Just open vlc ->
Tools -> Preferences -> Audio and set Output module to ALSA.

Right so I will add a screen shot in a bit but basically is shows 22
tracks in from the cd I just imported no gapless or ppm selected.
However in the playlist in the window below it shows 2 copies of all the
tracks and in the recently added tracks it lists 44 tracks added.

Greetings: I have been running a Ubuntu 11.04 (GNU/Linux
2.6.38-8-generic x86_64) box with the same configuration. It has an
uptime of 18 days, and has yet to fail. On the other hand, an Ubuntu
10.04.2 LTS box has failed twice with this problem in the same period of
