It seems that the wireless network was disabled by something external to Linux
(although I'm still not sure what that could be).
Wireless support is back on my laptop : to get this I rebooted and went to the
BIOS, then restore default parameters.
Somehow this seems to have solved the problem.

Is there a difference if the monitor is plugged in _after_ the desktop
