After some discussion it's been determined that gnome panel just uses a
timer every second and updates accordingly, there are other watches
involved presumably but the exact code seems difficult to locate.
The suggestion to do this properly is to either wait until there's a fix
in the kernel and g

Have been logging for a few days based on the request above, but haven't
had the problem crop up (naturally...). Will keep trying a while longer.
FWIW, I've had to "cure" the problem each time it's happened (4 or 5
times in a few weeks running Ubuntu on this box) by deleting ~/.pulse
and ~/.pulse-
Hell I don;t know how to bring up all that stuff that you brought up but
I have no volume control in Natty either. When I upgraded Natty the
sound control panel vanished like Hodini into the night and I can't
figure out how to get it back. I even put a sound control shortcut on
my desktop and it w

This is a feature, and would require a FFe. We've already pushed it
quite a bit with upstart, I think we'll save this for oneiric. James
Hunt and I will be having a couple of sessions and I think a round-up of
generic jobs like this will be at least part of one.

You've reported two problems:
1. The adjust dialog [can't] be moved if you don't know about "alt-
left_click-dnd".
You can simply click anywhere in the adjust dialog and drag the mouse to
move it. Does this not work for you?
2. The adjust dialog appears partially off the screen.
This is a prob
If an app uses notification area it needs to adapt to the Unity
environment. The app should fix this not unity.

Same problem still in Maverick. Disconnecting using the lower left hand side
connection button and then reconnecting (same way) will bring connection back.
This is not a fix obviously.
