Just tried mainline kernel 2.6.35.11; same problem, so I'm back on .32-26 again
:-(
Something I might not have explained earlier; when I select any 35-X kernel
version in Grub I get a blank screen with the cursor in the upper left corner,
pretty normal so far, but that's it.
There's no harddisk
BTW... I wrote I cannot afford to install Natty on this system, I didn't know
if there would be a 'live' option on the CD, so I did download and burn 11.04
today.
Booting from the CD works, I do get the "Install" menu, maybe that helps
