I have had problems with Ubuntu 10.10 locking up on a Compaq Presario
SR5109UK (original spec, 1Gb RAM) but without having done anything at
all with Compiz. On a couple of occasions it's happened when using
installing packages (Skype and Dropbox) and once when just web browsing.

The problem does not appear on Fedora using autofs 5.0.5 so it looks
like this is an Ubuntu specific bug.
Please note that the description for this bug report is misleading as

dailies, Ubiquity locks on the first screen), /boot installed on it's
own 250 MB btrfs partition, / on it's own 19 GB btrfs partition, system

to a packaging error in utouch-frame. I got a patch merged for this at
the end of last week but hadn't yet made sure that all of the uploads
had been pushed up the hill. I'm returning to this now.

I discussed that with upstream (David Zeuthen) now, and we agreed to
adding this quirk to udisks: if we find an UDF file system on a read-
only CD/DVD medium, we'll add dmask=500 to the mount options.
I now created a test CD with udf and a 0400 directory for testing this.
