The problem is gone since I have edited out the extraneous .utf8 that
has been appended by GDM. My current dmrc looks like:

... and it works.
I have never used any language selector since the system

could you first specify whether you're having problems with an internal mic,
external mic, docking station mic or all of them?
According to alsamixer, your internal mic is on, but the external mic
and the docking station mic is off. You can correct that by executing

Looking back at this relatively old bug, I wonder whether the lack of
agreement on categories (and hence the lack of progress) might be at
least partly because the preferred categorisation varies from locale to
locale. None of those who complain about the existing categories seem to
be English-lang

The CacheEntryExpire setting seems to be ignored. I changed the setting
to: "CacheEntryExpiry"=dword:0013C680 then imported the registry file
and issued a lw-refresh-config
