I can confirm that this issue is still present with kernel
2.6.35-25-generic. And also confirming that installing the updated
driver (as per above) fixes the issue. Thanks @PJSingh - before now, I
was having to sudo ifconfig eth0 up/down on repeat until it worked!

The highest resolution that works is 1280x800 even though vbeinfo reports
1440x900 is available.
