Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: network-manager
In Ubuntu and Kubuntu 10.10, and 11.04 alpha1, network-manager breaks
usb serial. I assume its looking for a USB modem or broadband device and
on of the tests does this. Removing the package network-manager fixes
the issue.

Jason found that the issue is related to the redecoration compiz call in
unity which is expensive. The same issue if affecting alt + tab in
compiz btw. (the more you have maximized window, that is to say,
undecorated one, the more time you will spend).

MPlayer shortly afterwards, and haven't really looked back at Totem.
Anyways, I just did a quick check, and I can't reproduce the bug at the moment.
Unless one of the others who confirmed it still experience this problem,
