I have this problem and gpointing-device-settings doesn't work for very
long. About 30 seconds after I disable it and close the app it re-
enables. I've not found any way to permanently disable the touchpad.

When I use alsamixer the headphones do not appear, but they are plugged
in. I have 'Master' (not zero) and 'PCM' (not zero), I also have
'S/PDIF' and 'S/PDIF (default PCM)' and both of those have zero and
cannot be changed.

I don't know, if it is relevant, but I have removed pulseaudio.
I tested also in Ubuntu 10.10, of which I have removed pulseaudio, too:
same error, if you use the --language option. The workaround shown in #9
does not work there, but I think it is another bug.
