K3B starts burning and says write successul + media is not present=load a

Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Natty Narwhal. It won't be
fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the
requirements
I'm unable to reproduce this bug with the most recent version of
BackinTime - the natty package, 1.0.6-1. Can you try with this one?
FWIW, the GTK stock 'open' dialog /does/ go up a level when you browse
with it, is this what you mean? The settings dialog of BiT doesn't
change each time though.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

I too got hit by this and lost a few hours in debugging it.
laptop-mode-tools is old cruft... its description makes it sound much
more useful than I gather it actually is, and given that this particular
bug has been open for over a year indicates it's not likely to get
fixed.
