I saw this error when trying to install Linux on my Windows 7 machine.
Eventually I solved it.
My issue was that at some point the partition table had become corrupted
- or mislabeled. The disk was labeled gpt but seemed to be actually
using a standard mbr type layout. The tools fdisk, diskpart,
I can confirm a similar situation here when using Networkmanager and
modemmanager as suplplied by ubuntu maverick repos. Last version that
worked for me was modemmanager 0.3.0 in lucid. My data is:

But i did something else already. I removed the pulseaudio package. And
somehow, now both my headphones and speakers are working individually :)
But, I cannot control the volume through the keyboard shortcuts :(

I'm almost sure this has to do with Tilda attempting to start before the
compositing engine is ready. The "fix" here would be to have the ability
to control startup application priority.
