Yup, it was still defaulting to unity ("ubuntu netbook edition").
Switching back to gnome fixed everything, and it then it continued
defaulting to gnome.
I discovered after I enter my username I get the option to select my
desktop.
So I guess the problem is primarily continuing to default to unit

I have just installed the latest Ubuntu 10.10 x64 desktop release. This is a
dual boot an my Asus Laptop With Windows 7,
Windows 7 was installed first. Sound is fine on Windows 7 but I have nothing on
Ubuntu. I can here a small clicking sound
