Yes, it seems to solve the problem. I can hear sound after having my
computer run for several days in a row after having installed the other
driver that is available in the link. Previously, there was no sound
from my speakers despite adjusting the sound level in Ubuntu 10.10.

cable and minicom 2 machines of 10.10. Your problem is that when

It's definitively not gdm. Downgrading to 2.30 doesn't help, and I had
my system running just fine with the new gdm until this morning's
upgrades. I checked dpkg.log and sized down the possible regression
candidates to about 10 packages. Bisecting now..

I have a Core i7-620 @2.8GHz
The problem only happened for me when the NVIDIA driver is being used.
With solution #151 I'm able to suspend reliably even with the NVIDIA
driver. My feeling is that it's the NVIDIA video driver.
I don't know anything about the nouveau.modeset=0 acpi_sleep=nonvs
