This turns out to be a combination of several issues:
The kernel driver likely does not have a driver for the touchpad which
supports multiple fingers. The touchpad however does support reporting
fingerwidth and can therefore be used with two-finger emulation.

Well, to report: The described module configuration fixes the problem.
Still it's not that great to still see it in both maverick.
I didn't realize it since i passed from 9.10 to a fresh install of 10.10 amd64
on my main machine.

I believe I'm seeing this same bug. Mirrored both screens show the full
visable area. Non-mirrored, 1 or both screens show only part of the area
that should be visible. A work-around (although very much not ideal) for
me seems to be to position the laptop screen below the external screen
in the lay

I forgot to mention the consequence of all this.
I am not able to disable LVDS (internal display), even when lid is
closed. Thus I have XGA resolution when booting up at home with a big
screen externally attached, because that's what the internal screen has.
It is very annoying watching scaled up
This segmentation fault appears to occur when running 'backgammon' with
a terminal less than 80x24. (I usually run it within a screen session in
a 80x24 terminal but the last line of the terminal is taken by screen's
hardstatus info line). Running 'backgammon' in a normal 80x24 terminal
works, but
