Ok, I noticed that I normally have the preview pane off for better
compatibility with the screen readers, but when I press F8 to turn on
the preview pane, the menu shows up. That at least gets me around the
problem, hopefully someone can fix this properly though.

The issue is created by bundling the new AMI, the process is not copying the
/dev. Booting the new instance Grub has the definition of root using LABEL=

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04. Among many other things that
it broke, the most annoying one was suspend/resume. The laptop (Sony
VIAO VGN-SR53GF) doesn't resume from suspend. The disk LED does
constantly light, but nothing comes back on screen. It used to work

@Linus: Quadrapassel is not working for you because you don't have 3D
acceleration working; I decided to create a new bug for that - bug
#654361. There's currently no fix for that (apart from getting your 3D
drivers working).
