I have read the complete thread and gone through all the procedure of
solving this problem but am unable to get my graphics card working on
the restricted nvidia binaries. I am now going to downgrade my xorg-
xserver but that is not a fix but a workaround and am not sure if it
works. I am using GeF

I was repeating some tests this AM and in retrospect this should be
fine. If the installation is begun from the Live Desktop any screenshots
can just as easily be saved to the Desktop or Home (wherever preferred)
and upon completing the installation choosing to keep testing, rather
than immediately
...and not working today, the day after.
More clues? Looks like it is caused by some variable condition on server
since when one client (XP or Lucid) has problem, all have problem.
And since yesterday, only obvious changes have been clients restarted
and daily/overnight cron jobs on server.

Since upgrading to the newest nvidia driver, my battery does not charge at all.
I'm not sure this is the cause of it, but it happened right after the upgrade
