After thinking it was a problem with Gnomecc, I reverted everything back
to normal, and then the desktop freaked out, going from a gray color
without icons to a black desktop with icons. It did this about 20 times
until the desktop, I assume, crashed. I have a picture attached.

Since Stefan mentioned h/w failure, I changed which port I was using on the
firewire card.
Interesting results. It appears one of the ports on the card is faulty, while
the other is ok.
Sorry for the noise. Results appended below in case they are helpful.

After connection to a Windows exchange server I went to Calendar, at
which point evolution hung, and I forcefully killed it. Now when I start
the program it starts in the Calendar (and keeps giving error messages
about not being able to connect

Let me attempt a more complete description. I was viewing a folder in
Nautilus. This happened to be a network mounted folder mounted via smb4k.
I cannot exactly say why it happened, but the entire icon view became
misaligned. There is an invisible row-column grid in which icons are placed
normally
Closing apport task, this should be fixed in the test browsers or
Launchpad. Also, Apport prints the URL, so you can open that from a
different computer (e. g. if you are ssh'ed into some server).
