The issue seems to be with totem. If you start it with a video, then it
doesn't try to inhibit the screensaver. However, if you pause and then
resume the video, it will inhibit as expected

I had a similar experience with the stock Ubuntu kernel, but a later
kernel I received from rsalveti fixed it. I'm not entirely sure which
one though, but the bottom line is that I'm no longer experiencing the

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 and openastro.org 1.1.23. I followed
the instruction that Hieronymus wrote on 2010-08-14. Now it works for me, even
from the start menu.

Starting smplayer kills the X server and returns me to the log on
screen. smplayer appears briefly (0.5s) then whole screen goes black and
