Found the error.
The key line was "paperconf: unknown paper `iso_a4'".
Turns out that my /etc/papersize contained an invalid value "iso_a4". I changed
it to "a4", and then everything went fine.
It's funny; I pride myself in not being a complete idiot, but here's
some nice evidence to the contrary

After resolving the linker issue I found other issues in the build. In
the end, the only way I have been able to get this to build was by
disabling thumb2, much like was done for hdf5. I did not like this
answer, but I am attaching a patch/debdiff for doing this on armel so we
can move forward.
This was not my preferred fix, but what I ended up doing for armel for
this, and no worse than what was done for hdf5. If it can be confirmed
as release critical I will be happy to attach sponsors.

mount options gets the device, local or network, listed twice.

'i915.modset=1' in the boot parameters wasn't successful. So, I can't be

Thanks for testing. Unfortunately Maverick won't get 2.6.36 kernel since
its feature freeze has started on august 12th. However, Ubuntu 11.04
(Natty) should get 2.6.36 or newer kernel. I'm not marking this bug as
fixed since Natty doesn't yet have repositories and because this bug is
affecting 9 pe
Just a note, this is postponed for natty. keeping the state as it before
natty is opened.

it has the bug, or is it the Ubuntu modifications that caused it.
