I was in a similar situation 1 year ago. Suddenly my mount script for
my crypted devices did not work anymore, because mount.crypt wanted to
have a cipher.
Finally I solved the problem by writing a wrapper script for mount.crypt
(see attachment) providing the old functionality.

Of course I have to build a new kernel each time updates issue, until

Single tap only works after switching to a text console and back.
It's also very hard to intentionally replicate the thing, it happens

Sorry, I think I was a bit to fast there.
Could you try installing these two packages:
usb-modeswitch libusb-dev
and then rebooting your computer, to see if that makes the modem work?
