The power indicator is actually full, and the issue persists irregardless of
power level. It seems as though whatever the battery level, once the AV
adapter is plugged in or removed, the battery level shows 0% for a split
second, triggering the automatic suspend.

I recently used a 10.04 Lucid LiveCD to do a dual boot on my laptop.
Audio CDs are recognised and played ok. I guess this means the image on
the LiveCD is ok.
I also used it to do a fresh install to my old Mesh Tower (to replace

I've seen something similar but I'm not sure if it's the same.
On my laptop I run mostly pidgin (irc etc) and occasionally firefox, and
sometimes if I kill the firefox with alt-f4 or clicking on the close one of the
irc windows will go.
