Finally got it working:
1. In the BIOS disabled "USB legacy support"
2. Boot with kernel parameter "usbcore.autosuspend=-1"
This way Lucid suspends and resumes many times. Did not check whether
the BIOS settinng is absolutely necessary because my harddisk isn't made
for frequent spin-downs.

Ok the underlying reason here is that we need to execute the syslinux
binary on local machine in order to install it, that mandates we use one
we can execute. If that is not compatible with the configuration as
specified on the CD for the version it uses ... breakage.

I've had the same experience. See my post in bug 605551 which seems to
be a duplicate. Also see bug 5954897, where it looks like the 2-6-35
kernel has the same bug.

Looks like this problem started with kernel 2.6.32-24 in the Lucid
distro. See bug 604807 which seems to be a duplicate, as well as bug
605551, where I posted my experience with this bug.
