Same problem, mounting a drive sometimes result in the "Not Authorized" error.
Rebooting helps most of the time, but i do have to reboot with the terminal

I got exactly the same issue with a Dell e6500 laptop. K3b and HAL are
installed in Lucid environment (not KUBUNTU).
It cannot erase CD-RW with an error message like "unable to unmount
medium".
After I manually umount the /dev/sr0 through command line, I can erase
it without problem.

I had the same issue until I went to Tools > Plugins > Voice/Video
settings and put everything to "Default".
Pidgin (2.7.1) has not crashed since.

Yes it is a karmic package. Ii get a chance I could upgrade it to lucid.
Your fix is probably fine though. What we need though is someone as part
of ubuntu to maintain this though. I will never put ubuntu on a software
raid machine again :/
