Same problem here, when trying to watch a RTSP stream (RTP over RTSP).
Can see the video, but the sound is very crappy (nosiy/jerky) and after
some seconds, VLC is using more and more memory, resulting in very high
loads and swapping. I think the sound problem may be a clue (who said

This bug has been bothering me for a while too!
The workaround I had been using was to open the Edit > Preferences and
then getting back to the address bar!
I had thought this was because the settings were some how lost. But
changing the window focus as you describe also works!

Same problem after upgrading from 9.10 (stable) to 10.4 stable.
Reinstalling libswt-gtk-3.5 packages solved the problem here too.

Apparently fixed upstream in the yet-unreleased 1.7.5. At least, I found

Maybe the screensaver being activated also triggers this bug.
I have filed a dup Bug #608157 as well , so that information can be gathered

Maybe this is being caused by some extension or FF 3.5 itself!
