Now I'm experiencing a similar, but not identical, bug with the PPA
package. I'm not able to reliably reproduce it, but when I'm shutting
down, there's occasionally a louder buzzing sound (as opposed to a pop
as before) that occurs as X is shutting down, but before the system has
shutdown.

The problem seems to be resolved (for me) simply by downgrading the
kernel, at least 2.6.31-22 (from karmic repos) works properly even with
the external monitor. I still use the x-retro driver, maybe it would
work with the official driver too.

Thanks for the enquiry. The machine has been off for a while (a week?)
but just before it was off, I saw one single file come down, although
there was a lot of loosing connection and connecting again.
