To make sure what happened: you ran the commands from Post 34 in Bug #572617
and the problem was solved but you lost a lot of settings. Then you ran the
command from Post 80 here and the problem is solved without loosing all your
settings (maybe just a few about your desktop session)

Touchpad works intermittently, and now in 10.04, when it does not work I
get:

Not fixed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Is there any way (besides disabling the
screensaver) to avoid this? Like manually removing the
pixmaps/'s from X?

Sorry - I have been away for a while without internet connection.
I have done all the above instructions. I have now tried to Sync again
but, unfortunately, the problem persists (with the same error message).

upstream says the issue should be fixed in the maverick version, the new
version is mostly a rewrite though so the change can't be easily
backported to the lucid one
