I have the same problem in 10.04 using gnome-swallow-applet rather than
i8kmon. Basically, applications take longer to load than 10 seconds when
you log in due to system load as the GUI is starting up.
A workaround is to right-click on the applet and select "reconfigure"

Redmine example configs and README.Debian says that running Redmine with
FastCGI is suggested. But to get it running libfcgi-ruby1.8 was needed

releases (intrepid to karmic), and now again for newer releases (lucid
onwards).
