Yeah well, it still does not see itself in the workgroup. I was able to
see it form a another Karmic machine, but after restarting the server,
the Karmic server sees no machines. You have to laugh at the state of
samba in Ubuntu at this point. Not once have I had a consistent
experience with samba.

just installed the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and pavmeter
open pavucontrol, unlock the channels and set a different level in each channel
after tha you can lock the channels again

I did just discover that I can make gnome-sound-recorder, and probably
other gstreamer apps, work by bypassing pulseaudio entirely for input.
Just use gstreamer-properties to select Alsa as the input plugin (I also
have to select my specific device "AD198x Analog", as default doesn't
work).

You can edit /etc/default/ntpdate and change NTPOPTIONS line to
NTPOPTIONS="-q"
which in effect tells ntpdate to "Query only - don't set the clock"
(quoting manpage).

As I wrote i comment #24 I made a new install including gconf -
2.28.0-1ubuntu4 before installing awn. The install of awn still fails
with unassigned key values.

If you're logged in as root you should be able to delete it. Try
'sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf' from any prompt in a console. Make sure
nothing (such as Synaptic or any otehr package amanegr / software
installer) is running first. .

I also noticed this after an apt-get dist-upgrade in Lucid today. I have
intel 965GM chipset, so this is not a DDX driver problem. I think both
the kernel and xorg-server was upgraded. Will see if downgrading any of
them helps. Moving to xorg-server for now.
