Seems as if this is a kernel problem: Allegedly the dm-loop function is
not part of the mainstream kernel, but an externally available patch.
Since it was working with intrepid and jaunty, it smells as if the
kernel team has dropped the patch from the ubuntu kernels.

So it would be nice if it got synced into Lucid.
For example https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
do/+bug/395190 is fixed which is quite nice if it got fixed in
that would be indeed interesting, but definitly not in the official
distribution ffmpeg package for the forseeable future. It could perhaps
be provided in a PPA, though.

Looks like the solution to this bug somehow affected me. Freshly
installed Ubuntu 9.10, DHCP network connection initialized by
networkmanager, and my firm uses .local domain names in their true DNS
server.
Until I stop avahi-daemon, in-organization DNS names fail to resolve.
