My apologies, Tormod. To be honest, I don't know how much related to the
original post this is. However, I am almost 100% sure this is the same
problem febrile is having (post #5). Furthermore, it may have something
to do with agp since I can boot with persistence if I yank out my
geforce fx5200 ag

well. The reason why I asked was that (for me) it worked before with
uppercase $TEMPNODE and after upgrading it does not any more. The
original rule is provided by Xilinx, so I wanted to be sure it is their

I have routinely installed GRUB 2 to various partition boot sectors
(as with sudo grub-install /dev/sdxn), and never had a problem using that to
chainload the partition. I do, however, get that Warning message
(This is a Bad Idea, etc.).

Hi,
I have the same problem, after upgrading to karmic (or after one of its normal
updates - sorry) I had no sound output from the speakers from any application
on my HP 550 laptop.
Sound output via headphone works, and speakers were no problem before in jaunty
either.
I installed linux-backport
pulseaudio or alsa, not linux generic

Just to mention, a very simple workaround of this problem is to "Print to
file", with pdf output. It works.
