Hello,
I have an external harddrive that connects using USB or eSATA. The USB
connection works well and automounts when the device is plugged in.
When I use the eSATA connection, I have to restart the computer in order
to have the drive recognized and useable.

After my last rebooting the problem seemed to be taken out ...
That means that neither dd or rsylogd 'destroy' the system .
In the /var/log directory I found that kern.log , messages , syslog files
appear double :

I still need to manually remember to run grub-mkdevicemap before update-

After playing around with the power_save value in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I changed it to 60 and the dropouts disappear.

It appears as if installing a media player, such as VLC, worsens the
situation. I have been running 9.04 daily now for quite a while, and the
problem appeared once. After installation of VLC, the problem appears a
lot more frequently. Coincidence???

I can confirm this bug on my Sony Vaio VGN-NW21MF, altough it has an ATI
videocard in it. It used to work fine until I upgraded to the -15 kernel
via proposed today. Now I also get the low-graphics mode error.

Do you mean that adduser likely crashed when you called it, leaving
those lock files? What's the kind of call you're passing to it? adduser
in Debian doesn't seem to be very responsive to our bug reports, so we
may need to fix it ourselves...
