Wait -- that's incomplete. Originally I deleted all the non-Intel
sections, and that worked. Looking for a solution easier for others to
follow, I tried just removing the quirks lines, and thought it worked,
but it didn't.
My solution, in short:
1. In /boot/grub/menu.lst
add i915.modeset=0 nomode
Eventually I was able to get it to work.
After several failed tries, the drive was not visible in nautilus, but
was still visible in usb-creator. This was not the case in previous
attempts. I select sdb1, rather than sdb and it worked.

upgrade 9.10), I can reboot and shut down safely.
Edit command didn't work for me, so I installed Kate as suggested by
alex #48 (by the way, his mistake was to write "unmountfs" while it is
"umountfs").

As a workaround, I've discovered that switching to EXA acceleration
seems to work. To do that, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make
sure you have a section that looks like:

Debdiff for Karmic only backporting the fix for this bug. I can confirm
that it resolves the issue and builds in a Karmic pbuilder.
Subscribing motu-sru for an ACK, and uploading the new release to Lucid
to include the fix there.

mysql couldn't shut down during the install for some reason, and so the upgrade
process hang.
I killed mysql manually, and the upgrade continued,
but at the end reported this error.

Could you give an example of a correctly spelled word and the suggested
replacement? A screen-capture would be even better.
