Attached is the Xorg.0.log (Karmic / atiradeon).
On Jaunty I used ati, radeonhd and fglrx, so I'm afraid I cannot give
you a useful log. By my recollection, ati and radeonhd did not have
(major??) suspend problems, but fglrx did until the latest two updates.

I don't think the thing is really crashing, it only seems to occur when
it can't get network access. Instead of waiting and trying again later,
lack of network access is throwing an exception.

I had an older version of the intel driver installed to increase
performance in the last release. After going to 2.2.9.0-1ubuntu2 the
problem has cleared up.
