I've managed to reproduce the problem on a colleague's Toshiba laptop.
Mirroring (via xrandr --auto ) worked but setting side by side mode in

Had to change /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (open as root)
With 9.04 I added the line
options snd-hda-intel model=medion

update using nvidia's installer (not Ubunut). I then updated via
alternate CDROM. xorg failed to start, and did not even give me an
option for low graphics mode. The first Xorg error that I received was

This is happening to me since ubuntu 9.04, when I connect through ssh (from mac
and linux and windows clients it's the same) it hangs after a while, generally
after going through the command history, but it also happens when navigating
directories or trying to edit files.

I installed Ubuntu version 9.10 on an old Compaq Presario 5000 without a
problem.
Then ran a Ubuntu 9.10 "update" followed by a complete install on a
newer Compaq HP Pavilion A6200T. Both failed after login - the screen
freezes. Version 9.04 ran fine. The newer system uses an Intel Celeron
D420

This bug affect both x86 and x64 architectures. I only had noticed it in
gnome. Starting from xterm or lxde don't make the system reboot, even
you can see the film!
