I just resolved this issue. The whole problem was caused by bios
setting. There is a "Protect Audio Video Path Mode" option under chipset
configuration. It was set at "Paranoid" and that was the cause of the
problem. When that bios setting is set to "Disabled" or "Lite" the
problem does not appear.

I found a work-around for this bug, you can see bug #467841, at the end
there is a patch (sortof) that enables normal boot with KMS and intel

PS I've just fired up Evolution and Empathy, and despite several minutes
of looking, and also googling about Evolution, I can't find out how to
turn off their appearance in the Indicator Applet, so I am again going
to uninstall both.

tested this as per the test case above using qemu-kvm 0.11.0-0ubuntu6.3
from karmic-proposed
the test case works for me, within seconds i am greeted with the ubuntu
installer menu. please advise if you require further information.

The same on Thinkpad X41. Buttons do work, but no OSD for Volume and Brightness

This is exactly my opinion Jonathan!
In Germany it's the Router of the Provider "Alice" which has this issue.
And i think it could be, that it maybe not talking in the correct
standard way but it worked in Hardy and Intrepid and where is the use of
forcing standard behaviour and killing functional
This problem is not present in 9.10.
