Problem confirmed.
The new sound mixer on this laptop is basically useless now and makes adjusting
sound volumes a hassle.
(The hardware buttons are unusable for example)
The main slider should control the PCM slider and leave the other controls

Check out info about applesmc. You can manually set a fan speed for
the CPU. If it doesn't support your hardware then you need to file a
bug against that (It is a kernel module).

openoffice was running - it was, although I didn't have any windows
open, as 'ps xa' showed:

I am traveling for a few days and cannot check my Ubuntu machine but I am
almost positive that I checked this recently and the most recent version of
