I have tried to reproduce this bug with all the GTK+ versions from
2.12.0 to 2.18.2. The first version to make inkscape crash is GTK+
2.15.2, but it crashes with a segmentation fault regardless of whether
we pass it a file on the command line.
GTK+ versions 2.15.3 through 2.17.2 all make inkscape
I already had 2.18.1 installed when I filed this bug, so no, it didn't
fix it.

I just tried installing the generic kernel and i think it installed.
After installing, it jumped right back into the emailmerge update and
froze. I then manually shut down my compter, restarted it and tried to
load the generic kernel, but there was no generic kernel to
select...only the rt kern

I had the same issue. When I made changes I was informed it would need
to write to xorg.conf and when I hit ok it would just freeze. This was
obviously because my user doesn't have access to write to xorg.conf.
When I ran gksudo gnome-display-properties everything worked fine.

load, system freezes with blank screen and does not resond to any key

I noticed that "xterm -rv" (ie black background instead of white)
prevents the issue from occurring. gnome-terminal defaults to a white
background though, so it's a bit odd that this changes anything for
xterm. It seems like an uninteresting hardware issue to us.

2. The most important thing is to grab logs of the failure on 0.22 systems with
