I do not think that changing only the background of gdm can fix this issue.
Gdm is still in the middle of two xplash operations and repeatedly flashing the
background does not look so nice.
One possible solution could be to have both xsplash and gdm use the same
background.

I don't think it's really needed. You download credentials to the client
system (the one you run euca2ools on) so it's on the client that you
need unzip. You don't really need it on the cluster or the node
controller... For the same reason you don't recommend euca2ools you
shouldn't recommend unzip
+1 for this. CUDA increases performance of compatible BOINC projects by
a factor of two to ten. Using the latest CUDA-enabled BOINC package off
their website results in about a fivefold improvement on my crummy
Nvidia 8500GT. This is a massive boost, and CUDA should be enabled in
Ubuntu packages as

Got it with alpha 5.
Got it again with alpha 6 (reinstall).
First I suspected a "creative" partition layout of
sda1 = NTFS
sda2 = FAT32
sdaX = boot
sdaY = swap
rest = encrypted with LVM inside
It boots fine and all is working, but the message is still there (hp

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its probably not our fault.
That is just a standard GTK widget, nothing special there.
I think what youre hitting is some sort of bug in the driver (or
possibly GTK... though my money is on the driver).
