After posting here I decided it was about time I put some effort into sorting

First step was to read the alsa config docs, which showed there is another mac
hardware option > model=intel-mac-auto
Updated this into my modprobe.d file (which now reads: options snd-hda-intel

computer ever went to sleep.

Im running into a similar issue on karmic:
While logged in as the first user, everything - even desktop effects - runs
fine.
Then switching to the second user via fast-user-switch, the system crawls down:
start firefox and scroll down a large page. It will take a while.

I'm still experiencing this with fglrx 8.66.10 (Sep 3 2009) / Catalyst
9.10 from the Ubuntu repos on 9.10 x86-64 with Radeon HD 3400 hardware
